When Are Winter Tires Required?

In Turkey, winter tires are mandatory between December 1st and April 1st for vehicles carrying intercity passengers and freight. While this requirement primarily covers commercial vehicles, winter tires are strongly recommended for private vehicles too in regions with snow and ice risk (Central Anatolia, Eastern Anatolia, and higher-altitude routes).

The Difference Between Summer and Winter Tires

Winter tires use a softer rubber compound that stays flexible even below 7°C, along with a deeper tread pattern, which significantly shortens braking distance on wet, snowy, or icy surfaces. Driving on summer tires in low temperatures reduces traction and lengthens braking distance, increasing the risk of an accident.

Our Recommendations for Renting a Car in Winter

  • Request a vehicle with winter tires when booking for regions where snowfall is expected.
  • Before a long trip, make sure the windshield washer reservoir is filled with antifreeze fluid.
  • Carrying tire chains is recommended for mountainous, high-altitude routes.
  • Let the engine idle for a few minutes before setting off in the morning when there's a risk of icing.
